Hedges make beautiful property boundaries but do involve maintenance to keep them neat, healthy and lasting. In most cases annual trimming will suffice but depending on species and styling tastes, can require up to three trims a year. When maintaining a hedge, you need to know what you’re working on. It is very easy to create bare patches or take too much off, which can be detrimental to the survival of the plant.
The most common hedges we work on are conifers. These species can often suffer from bare or brown patches. Evergreens such as Yew, Leyland Cypress, Lawson Cypress, Laurel, Holly, Bay, Pyracanther, Box and Privet can be trimmed all through the summer and up to late September, depending on the weather conditions. Most conifers will not grow back if they are trimmed back too hard so care must be taken.
Deciduous hedges like Beech, Hawthorn, Hornbeam and Hazel are usually trimmed annually. This should ideally be done after flowering, so between June and September is preferable.
We are happy to come and quote you for any hedge maintenance or removal requirements that you may have. We have experience in caring for hedges of all kinds and sizes and can provide you with information on recommended trimming intervals to maintain the health and aesthetics of your hedge.
